Erica's first time in Bangkok

This story technically belongs before our island trips, but I just got the photos from the camera so deal with it. Also, this story may not be for the kiddies, so please censor as necessary.

At this point, you may have already heard the tune in your head or maybe you've been humming it and didn't realize it. But I feel that it is my obligation to make sure that the song is firmly implanted into your brain before you continue....
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble!
(you know the rest)

We did not see the whole of the city, but we did get to visit Khao San road with some frequency. As noted in a previous post, Khao San is kind of like Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Actually, Bourbon Street is pretty tame in comparison. For example, Captain Jack Sparrow hangs out on Khao San. Actually, Captain Jack sells hemp bracelets on Khao San, but that's an entirely different post.

Also, they don't just serve drinks in glasses, but in pails (also called "buckets"). The funniest part is that the sidewalk bars have signs which read "we don't check id" and they are pretty much a collection of stools next to a guy with an ice chest. I don't think there is any such thing as a liqour licence here, but presumably they pay off someone to look the other way.
Erica's note:
Khao San is not something I'd ever seen in Idaho, or, well, EVER. Wow. Even a bucket and a half in I was basically speechless as my supposedly shy elder sister chatted it up with a German, a Latvian, and a couple of Canucks. So many different folks to look at, so many hawkers to look past, and everywhere, contrast: glassy skyscrapers girded by food stands and shacks, sky trains over shanty towns, people scraping by on Khao San while the Bangkok airport is the most massive, futuristic structure I've ever seen.
Of course, it's also good to see Erin and Joey. Erin is tending towards hippie these days with hair almost as curly as mine (yay, humidity!) and Joey, well, Joey hasn't changed a bit but has even more stories to tell than before...don't get him started on cricket.

Aye, Aye, Aye....
Somewhere along my journey of reading your travels, I'm not sure at what point, the whole Bangkok thing became wedged in my brain somewhere between 4th grade math and how to ride a bicycle. Consequently, I have had the song, yes, the very song you mention about Bangkok stuck in my head. Even worse, I ONLY KNOW THE ONE STINKIN' LINE!!!!
Just thought I would share. Welcome to Bangkok Erica....:)(or past tense I suppose :))

We stayed on Khao San road the first night we landed in Bangkok and 10 ear-thumping pee-smelling hours later we caught a taxi to the thirty-something backpacker guesthouses in Thewet. Recommended.

Also, I have to say it's amazing how similar our paths have been since we met you - Kayaking and Mahout thingy with Tiger Trails, Khao San Road and Spiderman 3 in Bangkok. Lonely planet my ass.

Hope you're both well!
