More Laos - Markets

Luang Prabang has an evening market which has stalls full of textiles and crafts made by the Hmong people and Laotians. The Hmong are one of Laos' ninety-four ethnic minority groups. They make most of their living off of tourists who buy quilts, scarves, carvings, and many other crafts which they lay out on the street every evening just before dusk. The street is actually closed each evening, so that the stalls can setup freely in the middle of the road. It is incredible to walk through.

We engaged in a bit of a buying spree our last night in Luang Prabang. We couldn't get too out of control because we were running low on cash (Laos has ATMs but we couldn't get them to work for us). Our home will be graced with some new textiles when we get back, including one of the quilts mentioned above. We thought of our moms when making our purchase but could only afford one. Sorry. Next time we will bring more money with us, promise.

The quilts are now safely (relatively) in my apartment in Denver. Hauling that extra backpack through customs was interesting: "Did you pack this bag?" "Well, sortof. My sister decided everything that needed to be packed and my brother-in-law packed it...but I basically saw everthing in there. I think. Mostly fabric." Extended customs gaze. Dirty hippie pants, frizzy hari. Good soul. "Move along."
